Note taking made easy

Throughout my internet life I have always been trying to find a note taking service that works. My main problem is that I need to be able to organize, save and quickly find anything. I found Nottr a while ago, which was fine, since it supported tags, but it closed for some reason, leaving me crying in the rain.

Enter Übernote, an app very closely related to Nottr. It looks like a Gmail account modified to handle notes. The internal mechanics are very similar, and so is the design, and for me this is a good thing. Simple, easy to use, all in all, it works. Let me explain to you in mind boggling detail why I love this new web 2.0 app so you may share the awesome knowledge and perhaps put it to good use while developing your productivity and organizational ninja skills, read on if you dare!

Design and technology

I think that the design of Übernote is great. While it’s not as fancy as Adobe Buzzword or some other apps, it look clean and usable, great in my opinion. The technology behind it is also put to good use, since it is lightning fast. Click on a title and type instantly, go to the note and change formats quicker than instantly.

Writing notes

Rick text editor in ubernote

Übernote features rich text editing, which is good, but it only gives you so much. As you see, you get underlines, bold letters, italics, links, indents and lists. There is also an undo and redo feature, plus a great printing and email feature. I’m not saying I wouldn’t enjoy some text colors, but I think it’s on its way.Tagging

This is the main reason I like this app. I need to tag my notes, not just because I’m a tag freak, but because this is the only way I can selectively look through them. You can tag notes while writing them on the right hand side, and even though you can’t actually create a new tag then and there, you can do that on the left menu. The new tag will be in the tag lists onvce you go back to tag the note, so I guess this is only a 2 second setback.

Search features

There is a search field available, I think this is standard. It works well, and it should, no plus points here. If you look in the menu though, you will see a lot of good stuff, which do earn Übernotes some good points. Last edited notes can be viewed, which is quite an awesome feature when you have hundreds of notes and you are working on 3 of them that you originally jotted down one month ago.

You also have starred notes like in Gmail, just click on the star on a note on the left hand side and you can view it in the starred notes section. This is useful if you are browsing through notes and want to come back to only a few.

A very unique feature I found (I’m not sure about how I can use this) is the bookmarks view. In this view it will show you all the notes that contain links in them. As I said, I don’t know how it can be used, but I’m sure it will be helpful to many, and this is a great feature I haven’t seen in any other such app.

Future development

I can still see a lot of things that could be added, but Übernote has started down a really good path. As with all good web 2.0 apps sharing could somehow be built in, and I wouldn’t mind a folder structure either. It might also be nice to add a date and calendar integration feature so you could also use it as a diary, but I think I’m going a bit too far too soon.

Overall this app should appeal to many people, I sure recommend it, since it has just launched and it already has all the features I need!
