Use shortcuts to access sites in Firefox

I found an extension for Firefox on gHacks today I’ve always been looking for, it gives you the ability to reach specific websites with a keyboard shortut. With Launchy and the new Awesome Bar in Firefox 3 getting to sites has become much easier, but Site Launcher is a different kind of wonderful.

Once installed you can configure it by adding URL-s and keyboard shortcuts for them. You can also remove existing ones from the list, so you can tailor this addon to yourself.  The greatest thig about it is that it caters for the shortcut junkies and the occasional users too with two types of usage available, an easy to follow overlay, and simple shortcut key type operation.

There are two “modes” available, a Launchy style Ctr+Space invocation where you’ll see an overlay with all your options. Once invoked you merely have to press one of the letters on the keyboard, the URL next to that letter will be opened instantly.

The second mode is for the hardcore shortcuter, you can press Alt+Shift+Key to get to the shortcut instantly. The key here is the same as in the overlay in the last mode, so you can use mode one to learn the keys, and then switch to mode 2 when you’re comfortable.

This is a great productivity addon for Firefox, I guarantee it will shave off minutes a day, especially if you hate having loads of tabs open. I frequently have to keep 4-6 open for work, which I hate by itself, if I get an email that might be another 1-2, and so on. It is great to have some of my favorites just one key away!

Firefox 3 comes with the ability to set keywords for your bookmarks. You can even do 1 letter keywords. type that letter/word into the awesome bar and hit enter. That seems just as quick as this add-on. Plus, you don’t have yet another add-on slowing Firefox down.

I quite disagree with this one, because of two reasons. In method 1 you invoke an overlay. The invoking itself, pressing ctr+space is far faster than going to the awesome bar and clicking on it. Second of all, the overlay acts as a reminder. If you have 30 sites, or you’re not the best at remembering shortcuts, the overlay will be helpful, since you don’t get any tips with the awesome bar.

Reason number 2 is that the plugin gives you true hotkey ability, meaning that instead of invoking the overlay you can go directly to the bookmark by pressing alt+shift+key, which you can not do with the awesome bar.

On another note, the purpose of an article is not necessarily “USE THIS TOOL NOW”, giving alternatives is always good, perhaps someone hates the awesome bar?
