If you do any blogging you probably know about Wordpress, if not, then you must check it out, it’s completely free and awesome. Changing blog themes frequently is not an option for most commercial sites, but if you have a personal blog you can find and implement some really cool themes, so here’s a short list of the best places to find them!

Wordpress Free Themes directory

The directory on the Wordpress site has a lot of themes, but the drawback of it is that you might have to sieve through a lot to find the right theme for you. If you have a recent Wordpress version you can also search this database from inside your blog, in the appearances section, making it super-easy to find great looks.

Web design websites

I favor web design related blogs over directories, since they hand pick some of the best looking themes for us. Even if you don’t like the themes they show you, you can be sure that they work well, and are well designed. My favorite sources include Smashing Magazine, DesignM.ag, Inspired Magazine, and the various web design blogs these sites link to (check out the Smashing Network).

Dedicated Wordpress theme sites

While there are many sites dedicated to themes for Wordpress, I have found them somewhat lacking in quality. This is not the case all the time, but basically they suffer from quantity over quality. Nevertheless, there are still great stuff on some sites, you might like to take a look at Wordpress Theme Base, Top Wordpress Themes and Best Wordpress Themes.

Google

Yes, HUGE surprise here, but you can use Google to find good themes. I find this method most productive when I’m looking for something very specific. Searching for “good Wordpress theme” will not be too useful, but if you’re looking for a bamboo style theme with a Chinese dragon on it you might find our favorite search engine a bit more relevant. Results here are absolutely hit-or-miss, but at least you might find exactly what you need. If you do find some great themes, feel free to recommend them in the comments!
