Speed up your FireFTP connection in Firefox

This might be obvious for most of you, but I’ve always found FTP to be quite slow. When uploading 3-5 files, why do I have to wait for them to upload one after the other? Well it turns out I don’t. I use FireFTP for ftp uploads which runs inside Firefox and I just found an option in its settings which enables simultaneous file transfers (up to 10 at a time).

Install it, and go to the addons page, find FireFTP, click on options and go to the connections tab. Set max simultaneous uploads to whatever you need and hey presto, you’ve just increased your ftp speed by a factor of 10. That may have been obvious, I just found it though so I’m enjoying my new found speed. If you have hundreds of files to upload, you’re better off zipping them and extracting them on the server if you can.

FireFTP – The ftp client for Firefox

fire ftpAn application that is among the first 5 install is actually an extension for Firefox. FireFTP is a simple ftp client for Firefox, but is probably one of the main applications for my productivity. It enables me to upload and download files like pics for my blog easily, without having to leave my browser.

This means I don’t need to open an extra program, and I can just open it in a tab anytime, even open up multiple instances if I want. The application doesn’t provide as many features as SmartFTP, a standalone program, but if simple file transfer is all you need I can heartily recommend it.

A great feature I use is that you can set default locations for your local machine and for the ftp site. Just navigate to a location on your PC and a location on the server, go to manage accounts – edit, click on the connection tab and click on the use current button for both locations. If you backup a lot you can also sync locations, going between directories simultaneously.
